"The Spectator"

The wind is soft and breaths in steady tones,

And calms the empty streets, so sapped of noise.

The grass is granted leave from steps, and moans

About the shamed neglect from girls and boys.

"a short poem on resilience and learning in the era of covid-19"

When at night time

The street lights

Begin to feel more like your sunshine

Let the luminescence fill your day

Trust me, that is okay

Kimberly hickman

"The Difference"

The difference between you and I is how we write “and”

You curve it at the top like a backwards treble clef

As troubled and curved as the others in your life

"The ring"

The sunrise is my alarm,

I gather myself and courage.

I step into the ring again.

The bell rings and the fight begins.

"The wave"

The wave came over me

Drowned and set me back at bay.

I longed to arrive upon my treasure.

So close, yet so far

How did it come to this?

"The flower garden"

I know that it’s been a while

Since we last spoke and talked.

I’m reminded of your laugh and smile

In the garden of flowers.

"For my best friends"

Though at the end of the world life feels crazy,

when my best friend came to visit from Miami

it felt like how it always used to be:

We rolled that joint and no one smoked it,

you borrowed my shoes and thought that I wouldn’t notice,

your boyfriend called you a bitch

and we laughed though I wished

you wouldn’t take that shit.
