"Social Media"
In our day and age,
Almost everyone has a page.
Not in a book or in a journal,
But somewhere much more vulnerable.
Whether it be Facebook,
Instagram, Twitter or more,
Almost everyone has a social media,
That they like to explore.
Hours can be wasted,
Scrolling on these sites,
Seeing pictures of someone’s kid,
Or a post about violated rights.
Social media has its perks,
Such as connecting with an old friend,
Or a colleague from work.
What you can say has no end.
Find out about events coming up,
Or read about the newest cosmetic device.
Maybe see cute pictures of your sister’s pup,
Or share a delicious recipe with rice.
But social media has a dark side.
That fact no one can deny.
Bullying has never been easier,
And stalkers can be real sly,
(I think I watch too much Dateline)
Teens have become nastier,
Saying mean things online.
They were probably happier,
Spending more time outside.
We have given up a sense of privacy,
We have given up part of our humanity.
Part of you and me.
And it’s not only teens,
As many try to make it seem.
Baby boomers participate on social media,
Grandma and grandpas too.
People of all ages can be found on Facebook,
And Instagram too.
Catfishing has become more common,
But people still accept requests,
From those they don’t know.
Gossip can spread with a simple comment,
And ugly sides of people tend to show.
So before you click the button,
Before you press “accept”, “post”, or “reply”,
Make sure you haven’t forgotten,
You don’t have a chance to retry.
In our day and age,
Almost everyone has a page.
Not in a book or in a journal,
But somewhere where much more vulnerable.
