"Mama Nature" from One Voice

The acrylic on wood mural is titled "Mama Nature." I had the opportunity to paint this mural for a gallery I curated called "One Voice". The theme of this gallery was to show the intimate connection we have with nature. We often forget that as humans, we are a part of nature. We often see ourselves apart from it or even superior and above it. Because of this ego mindset, the consequences have only escalated: climate change is edging towards the point of no return, and there aren't enough governments taking action to preserve our home.

 

I made this mural with two wood boards and acrylic paint. I also used a transfer method to paste recycled paper on the wood before painting on it; this added texture. I constructed the entire gallery with recycled materials, from plastic bags, containers, and bottles; cardboard boxes; and paper. 

 

I am sharing a truly vulnerable aspect of myself because both art and the environment play a sacred role in my life. I have advocated for the environment as an ambassador who traveled to Costa Rica and worked with Ecology Project International. I have grown to deeply care for this planet because it has provided me with a home -- a gift that money and greedy corporations could never replace. 

 

In any way possible, I share my love for the planet through art. I use my art to unearth truths often overlooked by society. I use it ultimately to connect with people on a heart and soul level. That, I believe, is my purpose as an artist.
